Interaction between humans and automation
Collaboration or interaction between people and automation is of particular importance within digitalisation, since new technology must be adapted for human use. The new technology must be adapted to the person’s physical and cognitive capacity in order to meet future challenges in relation to safety and user-friendliness, for example.
A user-friendly digital solution increases efficiency and use, reduces the number of errors and reinforces the positive perception of the technology (automation).
Basic concepts within interaction between humans and automation are levels of automation, cobots and adaptive systems.
There are various levels, or grades, of automation. These are examined further in the article: Levels of automation: cognitive and physical automation.
Cobots, or collaborative robots, are robots which work together with human beings. They can be used to introduce greater flexibility into manufacturing processes and relieve the workload associated with exerting, repetitive operations.
Adaptive systems are those which automatically adapt to a situation. An example of adaptive technology is a cobot, which adapts to the motion of a person.
